my daughter was super excited to receive this leappad epic, she is 6. we have had most of the leappad’s previous versions, before this one. this tablet has good and bad things with it. I will start with the good. it has an active background setting were she can interact with items in the background, new things everyday also. it comes with its own protective bumper. it comes with twenty apps. wifi connection I have not had any problems with, it has 16 gb hard drive and ability to have micro SD card put into it. 7 inch screen, and android based operation system, which is more like a smart phone than a leappad tablet. it is faster too with a 1.3 ghz quad-core processor, I believe that its the fastest leappad has put out yet. the ability to access the internet. the child can only access child safe and leappad approved sites, and videos. you as a parent can change this in the parental controls, to add a website, to add full web browsing, but I did not set this up it is still in child safe mode because of her age. under the parent controls you can add apps that you own to your device. you do not need to connect to the leapfrog connect on your computer it is done wirelessly to your epic device. as the parent you have the control to access the amazon app store, which I did. you have to install this app, I used my existing amazon login and password, really easy. the amazon app store is only available under the parent controls, your child cannot access it, without your control. I downloaded a few apps for her. I had to disable in app purchases, you have to do this in the amazon app center menu games/apps settings and you can set up the password to enable in app purchases etc. downloading apps was kind of slow, but its not really that slow we are just use to fast and faster with new technology. the stylus is pretty similar to the leappad 3. the connection for charging the device is different than any other leappad tablet. it does not have the same connection port as the other leappad devices, it now has a connection that would fit my cell phone. the epic is easy to use for my daughter she loves watching the videos they supply online of dogs, toy story, elmo, etc.
Now for the disappointment. there are some apps you cannot remove off the tablet. why I don’t know. the system does not accept the leapfrog game cartridges you buy separately. it does not connect to the computer like a normal leapfrog tablet, it does not show in leapfrog connect application at all. when you hook it up to your computer the computer recognizes it as a device like a phone, probably because the android os. it was confusing for me the parent to insure all safety precautions we taken so she could not buy anything or how to get the amazon app. it took me a good two hours going through everything trying to get apps. but the most annoying and upsetting thing about this tablet is, although I PURCHASED a good twenty apps for my kids to use in their leappad tablets, the EPIC FAILS HERE. only SOME of my purchased apps are available with the epic. I mean like five out of the twenty I bought. my daughter loves the two care bears apps in the leapfrog app center, but they are not available with the epic tablet. I do not know if there is anyway you can check before you buy an epic what is available on it. I do not know if they are planning on added these apps later. I don’t know why I cannot put the apps I PURCHASED on my kids tablet. all we have are apps I got in the amazon store or choose to buy through my leappad epic.
I honestly don’t know if i’d recommend this tablet. yes I love that its kid safe, I am in control with the material she sees. But I hate the fact that you cannot get all the apps you previously purchased with your other tablets. I don’t know if its going to change or not, yes the amazon app store is awesome, but not only does it not use the game cartridges which I was okay with, because I thought she could still use her other apps, but she cannot. leapfrog epic or regular tablet? well a regular tablet is cheaper, and is basically what I got when I got this. leapfrog needs to let us use our apps we bought and then i’d be happier.
